Living History and Survival at Sea

We woke up at 5:00 AM in front of a small shrine in Hiroshima, covered in mosquito bites and breathing in the suffocating heat. As we walked toward the Peace Memorial, we noticed massive crowds gathering. Suddenly, a man with a microphone and a cameraman stopped us for an interview! 😂

It turns out that while we were sleeping, they had cordoned off the entire area for high-profile officials and dignitaries—but since we were already inside, we accidentally became the most «exclusive» guests at the ceremony.

We were stunned to realize that it was August 6th. Exactly 73 years ago, on this very day in 1945, the first atomic bomb in history was dropped right where we stood. We had no idea our arrival would coincide with such a powerful anniversary. What a coincidence!

We visited the temple, offered a prayer, and at 8:15 AM, we joined thousands of people in a minute of silence. It was an overwhelming, spectacular moment that we’ll never forget.

Shipwrecked in Paradise

After letting the emotions sink in, we started hitchhiking toward Miyajima Island. A very kind local picked us up and dropped us at the ferry terminal. We bought a one-way ticket for about 1€, no return plan, obviously 😂, and set off to explore.

After playing with the local deer, we hiked to a secluded, paradisiacal cove with crystal-clear water. We found an abandoned boat on the shore, cleaned it up, patched it as best we could, and decided to set sail.

We drifted further and further out, enjoying the views and following the current… completely unaware that the tide was pulling us into the open sea. An hour into our «expedition,» we tried to head back, but the current was too strong. Our «oars» were literally just bamboo sticks.
After a frantic struggle against the waves, we finally managed to muscle our way back to the coast. Safe at last!

Fireworks and Deer

Later that evening, we met a group of students throwing a party. We built a bonfire together and ended the night with Hanabi (fireworks). After a night full of laughter, we finally crashed on top of a wooden camping table, surrounded by a gang of stubborn deer.
